Two Common Etsy Mistakes To Avoid

In this quick episode (blog below), we are talking about a couple of Etsy basics! These are two errors I see TONS of shops making, so I want to make sure you're not making them too. This audio is taken from a live training from the Energize your Etsy Group coaching, which will soon be available as a course! When it comes to Etsy, I see a lot of people skip some of the basic shop set up's that ends up really hurting them in the long run.

So my goal in this short blog/podcast episode is for you to make these EASY tweaks and avoid ever making these mistakes again. First...

Announcements

Announcements are the first thing that shoppers see when they land on your site. I have stumbled upon tons of shops in the summer that still have their Christmas sales listed. The announcement bar is an amazing way to share coupon codes or give details about sales, but only if you're going to keep up with it!

Either update it regularly or not at all.

You can see that my announcement hasn't been updated in over a year. I could be missing an opportunity to connect with clients, but I could never remember to update it! I decided it would be best to have a more permanent announcement. If you're like me and often forget about this little feature, you can use this space to introduce yourself, share shop hours, how to reach you, and so on. This is a great place to highlight any changes in processing time or handling things with Covid-19, for example.

If you want to highlight your shop, sales, etc. (which I highly recommend!), here are some tips.

  1. Add dates/reminders to your calendar to update your shop announcement. If you're sharing sale information that is time sensitive, make sure you set that alarm or reminder to change it as soon as the sale ends or right before it's over.

  2. Use the announcement bar for long term sales. This is great if you have a permanent buy 2 get one free deal, for example. Many people offer 10% off when you spend x amount or free shipping on x amount. This is a great place to let them know!

The last thing we want is for someone to land on our shop, see an outdated announcement, and assume that our shop is neglected. While these are small details, remember that shoppers may be comparing your items to many shops, and something little like the care that you give your shop appearance might be the deciding factor for them to buy or not buy from you.

List your website

In your about section, make sure you link your website if you have one! This is an excellent way for them to get to know you better, and they may decide to buy off your site, which would save you some Etsy Fees.

If you are trying to grow your Etsy, and I assume you are, if you're here, I do recommend having it on your website, too.

In my main navigation, I have Etsy linked so they can go right to my Etsy and shop there. The reason? Pinterest is one of my largest traffic drivers (it can be yours too! Take my free course here), and when they land on my website, they want to learn more. On Etsy, I have over 550 five star reviews. I would be doing myself a disservice if I didn't let people read great reviews from other real people.

When shoppers land on my website from Etsy, they have no idea if I am a legit business or a scammer. Of course, you know I am not, but they don't. Allowing them to see my products in another place and see that hundreds of real people just like them have ordered and loved what they got, is going to make the sale a lot easier to make. This is especially true for a high ticket item like wedding invitations.

Some people may find you on Etsy and prefer to order from your website. Some people may land on your website and prefer to order from your Etsy. Both scenarios happen to me regularly. Give buyers this option!

If you don't have a website, I do recommend having one. I know that is a big task, but you might consider adding it to your long term goals! I went for several years without a website and was still able to make six figures doing so!
